If disaffected and alienated teens ever had a voice that conveyed their innermost thoughts, it was The Smiths.
The Smiths were a band from Manchester, England that formed together in 1982. Led by enigmatic lead singer Morrissey, their music reflected the heartbreak, confusion, and ambiguity that's often attached to growing up. Morrissey's lyrics were clever and often snide, rooted in a sense of longing. The asexual nature of the music allowed it to be relate able to virtually all walks of life. His words combined with guitarist Johnny Marr's virtuoso riffs made The Smiths one of the most influential bands to emerge from the 1980s.
Their formation was very short lived, releasing three studio album before their final record Strangeways, Here We Come in 1987. Fighting among band members about the direction of the music led to the breakup. Morrissey has been quoted as saying that under no circumstance will The Smiths get back together
Moz went on to have a successful solo career, putting out nine albums including Years of Refusal in early February .Marr became a member of the popular Seattle alternative outfit Modest Mouse before their 2007 full length We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank. Recently Morrissey turned down an offer of $100 million dollars to reunite onstage with The Smiths, proving that some people will still choose convictions over money (I'm looking at your direction Sting)
