It's never wise to make generalizations, but it's safe to say that every self respecting indie kid has seen and adored the film Donnie Darko. The 2002 sci-fi drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Drew Barrymore made a paltry amount during it's box office run, but because of it's intriguing plot and philosopical themes gained new life as a cult classic.
The film takes place in 1988 and the music of the decade is an intergral part in several of the scenes. The British version of the soundtrack is filled with the choice New Wave bands of the moment like Duran Duran and INXS, but the standout songs are the ones featured in Darko's most pivotal moments.
Tears For Fears-Head Over Heels
This slow motion scene captures the tone of the film perfectly, giving you a sense of the personalities of principal characters set to the hit of the English pop duo. The scene also features a young and clean shaven Seth Rogen who plays one of Donnie's anagonists. "Heels" infectious piano and baseline add to the camera's seamless transistion of focus.
