Love Will Tear Us Apart

Adapting inner pain and turmoil into a form of art takes an amount of fortitude and bravery that few possess. Vocalist Ian Curtis struggled with severe depression throughout his entire life, and committed suicide in his hometown of Manchester at the age of 23. His band Joy Division, bordered on royalty in the 70's UK underground punk scene because of their haunting and visceral sound.Their 1979 debut record Unknown Pleasures was widely adored by critics and spawned the indie staples "Disorder", "She's Lost Control", and "Shadowplay". Their most notable hit, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" was not on a proper Joy Division album, but rather the 1980 compliation record Susbtance. The sweeping and guitars coupled with Curtis' signature monotone warble made "Love" an anthem of choice for disaffected youth across the pond.It was named the best single of all time by NME magazine in 2002.

Faced with the harsh reality of their frontman's death, the remaining members of Joy Division decided to press on in the form of New Order.Guitarist Benard Sumner took over on vocals and the style musically leaned to more and a dance and synth approach.
