My Bloody Valentine

The faces of the short-lived height of shoegaze, My Bloody Valentine fused emotive vocals with a crushing and overwhelming sound. The band was formed by Colm Ó Cíosóig and braintrust Kevin Shields in Dublin Ireland in 1984. They relocated to London and built up a steady fanbase across the UK. After releasing a series of singles, the band released its debut album Isn't Anything in 1988. The record was well received by critics and reached number #1 in the UK indie charts.

My Bloody Valentine made its far reaching influential impact with 1991's Loveless. The 11-track opus perfected the "wall of sound" style that the scene prided itself on, from the devastating riff of the opener "Only Shallow" to the twisted whimper of "Soon". The vocals are notable for being emotive yet intelligible, more than eager to let the deafening wail of the guitars take over. The true beauty of Loveless lies in the song "When You Sleep", a love song blanketed in distortion.
