Many venues around the country will mark the hands of underage patrons with an "X" in order to indicate that they shouldn't be served alcohol during the show. A simple enough practice that symbolically reflects the ideology and way of life of Straight Edge. Straight Edge (Or sXe) is personal decision to abstain from using tobacco, alcohol, and drugs, and in some cases eating meat and premarital sex.It is not necessarily tied to religion, as you can be of any faith and still practice it. The term comes from the song "Straight Edge" by 80s hardcore band Minor Threat, whose vocalist Ian MacKaye adopted the "X" marking to represent the lifestyle.
While the D.C. based band spearheaded the underground movement, groups such as 7 Seconds, Youth of Today, and Gorilla Biscuits also preached the convictions about a "Poison free" life.
